Mackie Speakers Go Around the World in Eight Days with Windfield Productions

Denver, CO - For Dano Goforth’s Windfield Productions, there’s no such thing as a typical
show. The Denver-based company handles everything from corporate events and
seminars to festivals and religious occasions. And on any given day you may find Goforth
loading his Mackie systems into a C-17 military jet for a USO tour in the Middle East.
“We’ve been using Mackie gear for years, on tours all over the world,” says Goforth. “I’m
a fan of the SRM450s – we’ve used them since the beginning of the wars in Afghanistan
and Iraq, on everyone from Toby Keith to Joan Jett, and they’ve been great workhorses
under some pretty brutal conditions.”
Oklahoma country music superstar Toby Keith talks with Quartermaster Seaman John Mendez while touring the bridge of the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72). Keith is on his 10th tour with the United Services Organization, performing for deployed service members around the world. Lincoln is deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility conducting maritime security operations, theater security cooperation efforts and support missions as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. (U.S. Navy photo by Mass Communication Specialist Seaman Zachary S. Welch)

Goforth recently upgraded Windfield’s inventory to include Mackie’s HD1221
loudspeakers. “We use the 1221s on pretty much everything,” says Goforth. “It’s an
incredibly versatile box. I’ve used them for mains, for monitors, for side fills, all kinds of
stuff. We’re also using the new HD1501 and 1801 subwoofers. They sound great and
they’ve proven to be exceptionally durable. That’s important for the kind of tours we
do.”

As Goforth points out, “portability” takes on a different perspective on military tours.
“Loading in and out of Blackhawks, C-130s or C-17s, a lot of times space is at a real
premium,” he says. “The gear has to be compact, easy to handle, and able to take a
beating and work in all kinds of climates and conditions.”
Some tours include additional shows on even smaller transport. “On some of these
outpost tours, we’ll do a big show one night and then take a smaller system – just a
couple of our SRM450 boxes on sticks, and the same thing for monitors – and do shows at
one or two smaller forward operating bases,” says Goforth.

The shows present a wide range of performers, and the HD’s versatility has already
proven itself. “The last tour went around the world in eight days with Kix Brooks, Robin
Williams, Louis Black and Lance Armstrong,” says Goforth. “That was the first tour we used
the HDs on, and everyone really loved them.” “I stick with Mackie gear because it’s compact, reliable and sounds great. And the stuff holds up in a war zone – what more can you ask?”

GoGo Tuner TT-1 Review Headstock Tuner

Quickly getting in tune...

There are many tuners on the market that clip on to your headstock and most all of them really work the same way, they effectively get you in tune very quickly in just about any setting. They all seem to work the same by using either a built-in mic or the vibration of the instrument to pick up the note values and the GoGo Tuner TT-1 works the same way. However, this little puppy has some pretty cool little features and conveniences that make it stand out a bit above the rest.

The main features are its fast accuracy up to ±.5 cent and a range that covers from A0(27.5Hz) - C8(4186.00Hz), and can be calibrated for alternate tunings with a pitch range from 430-450hz. The TT-1 also precisely tunes a multitude of instruments including Acoustic guitar, electric bass, violin, viola, ukulele, electric guitar, brass and woodwind instruments, and has 5 settings Chromatic/Guitar/Bass/Violin/Viola. It uses a single battery and comes with an Auto Power-Off function that preserves the battery life (something I think any musician can appreciate).

The real stand out features are the large bright LED screen which illuminates red when out of tune and green when in tune while simultaneously showing you if you are sharp or flat etc. The 360 degree swivel arm bracket makes positioning the TT-1 a snap in any direction. Such a design makes this a great tool for learning note names as you practice (if playing scales slowly this tuner will pick up each note, helping you develop a better sense of what notes are where on your fret board and aiding in the development of your ear to distinguish pitches accurately). The swivel also makes it easy to hide the bulk of the tuner behind your headstock, therefore leaving it intact to “tune on the fly” during gigs without having a huge eyesore on the end of your axe. The clamp is very rugged and durable as well and has a soft rubber inside the clamp that clings tightly without scuffing or scratching your prized instrument.

With these few added features and intuitive functionality the TT-1 GoGo Tuner is one of the coolest little headstock tuners on the market today and at a price of $29.99 a smart buy on a tool of the trade you can’t live without.

Studio Software Review & Video Studio One

Dave Thompson Review:
"Having been a studio engineer and running my home studio for the last 15 years I can honestly say this is one of the easiest platforms to work on.  It's cross platform meaning I can run it in any studio, and it's the same version.  Mac or PC doesn't matter.   That's huge on it's own.  Second, sound quality is second to none.  It's obvious when you first load it up.  Even in headphones.  Lastly, the Pro version is a fully integrated studio solution, that has end to end tools. From production to CD burning and soundcloud integration.  Nothing on the market comes close at this price.  Period."

OnlyFactoryDirect.com is an authorized PreSonus Dealer. We carry a large variety of studio monitors, mixing boards, digital mixers, acoustic foam, recording interfaces, midi devices, headphones and more.

JBL Loudspeakers Are a Hit at Philadelphia’s Newest Nightclub

NORTHRIDGE, California – It’s not a rumor: Philadelphia’s brand-new Rumor nightclub is a 10,000-square-foot venue featuring two dance floors, multiple oversized bars, private catering facilities and more—including a private VIP room called the Vault. Patrons can enjoy music from Rumor’s multiple sound systems, which include a variety of HARMAN’s JBL loudspeakers powered by Crown amplifiers, and controlled with BSS processing and HiQnet London Architect™ software.
“We needed to provide sound for a number of spaces that differed greatly in their sound reinforcement requirements,” noted Ian Hoffer of Aurora Sound and Light Design, which specializes in nightclub system design. “The Vault is an elegant, high-end room with velvet walls. One of the bar areas has a VIP cove at the end that needed audio. There’s an oval-shaped dance room that presented some challenges, and even the bathroom hallway had its particular acoustical requirements.”
The system in the Vault includes four JBL AC28 compact 2-way loudspeakers and two ASB6115 15-inch subwoofers. “This combination gave us all the sound coverage we needed without overly intruding into the space,” said Hoffer. “We used two Crown Macro-Tech i Series MA-5000i amplifiers to drive this system. The velvet walls in The Vault were put there as part of the room décor, not for acoustic reasons, but they actually provide a great acoustic environment.”
The Lev Room is an oval shaped dance floor with a DJ booth at one end. “We found by installing two JBL AM7215 high-power, 15-inch, 2-way, full-range speakers and two ASB6125 dual-15-inch subs gave us powerful sound with plenty of impact, yet without creating any acoustic problems that might have occurred considering the room’s oval shape,” Hoffer noted. “The DJ booth is equipped with two SRX712M 2-way, 12-inch stage monitors, which happen to work perfectly in this application, along with an ASB6115 subwoofer. The combination of the SRX712M monitors and ASB6115 sub in the DJ booth work perfectly together.”
To avoid any dead spots in the club, Hoffer chose six JBL Control®Contractor 322CT in-ceiling speakers and two ASB6125 subwoofers in the VIP cove at the end of the 40-foot long bar, and four Control 47LP in-ceiling speakers in the bathroom hallway. “We installed the Control 47LP speakers there so people could still hear what was going on in the main rooms while they were in the hallway,” Hoffer added. “The bar is quite striking, by the way, because it’s illuminated and constantly changes colors.” A Crown CTs Series CTs 3000 amp powers the VIP cove and hallway speakers.
“We used the Control 47LP and 322C in-ceiling speakers because I feel you get a fuller sound from them than from competitive models,” stated Hoffer. “They were easy to install with no mounting issues at all.”
All the audio signals for Rumor’s sound system are handled by a BSS BLU-160 signal processor with digital audio bus capability, augmented by four BLU-BOB2 breakout box output expanders. Control is provided by the BSS London Architect programming interface and HARMAN HiQnet software. “I had never used the JBL ASB subwoofers before this project – and I was very impressed with them,” said Hoffer. “Thanks to the London Architect setup and configuration macro for the ASB subs, we were able to get a great sound from them.”
“Everyone at Rumor is happy with the project,” Hoffer concluded. “The Vault is the newest and most popular Thursday night venue in Philadelphia and Rumor has been getting nothing but rave reviews.”

How do I add outdoor speakers to my home audio system?

So you would like to add a pair of speakers to your outdoor patio or deck, but you don't want to break your wallet doing it. Good news, it's easy and inexpensive!

Using a selector box to add speakers is a cheap and easy way to expand your stereo's capabilities. A four channel selector box is a simple solutions to expand the number of speakers you can connect to your existing amplifier. Utilizing an impedance matching selector box like this one from Theater Solutions (TS4) will protect your amplifier for only $39.99 (msrp: $134.99) while allowing the wattage to be shared amongst additional speakers. The TS4 allows you to add up to four pairs of speakers to your current stereo system. Connect the selector box from the output of your receiver to the L/R positive/negative inputs on the selector box, with standard raw stereo wire.

It is important to know how many watts per channel your existing receiver/amplifier outputs at 8ohms. Find this information in the receivers manual,  if you don't know where the manual is, not to worry most manuals are available digitally on-line. Search for the manual by the model number of your amplifier / receiver with the additional word "manual" on your favorite search engine. If your amp only offers 50w per channel or less, then you need to consider upgrading your amp/receiver. Most home receivers and amplifiers produce 100w per channel at 8 ohms. Remember the selector box only splits the power between each zone that is engaged. So if you have two zones running, that is four speakers, with a 100w amplifier, each speaker is receiving approximately 25w. This doesn't sound like much, but home audio speakers these days are much more efficient and can perform beautifully on very little wattage.

Next, select a pair of outdoor speakers, that match the needs of your environment. This is an excellent product to take the warranty into consideration when you are making your purchasing decision. Make sure you select a sealed enclosure that has been tested to withstand harsh environmental stresses, like moisture, dust, temperature and direct sunlight.  Remember sound is directional and because outdoor audio usually does not have the benefit of walls and ceilings, the placement and angle of the speakers is critical. When deciding on the location of your new speakers, envision the area of your patio or deck that will receive the most use. In some situations it is the around the table and chairs, but for another it might be the pool. Be realistic about how far apart you install your speakers, again, sound will not travel as far outside as it will inside therefore you will need to install your speakers a little closer together.

Once you have selected your outdoor speakers, you will need an outdoor grade, 2 conductor speaker wire. The speaker wire can be purchased by the foot off the roll, but you will usually end up spending more, than if you purchase a standard 100ft or 500 ft roll (sell the remaining wire on Craigslist). Measure the distance of the "run", or how far from your amplifier to the speakers the speaker wire will travel, any run over 40ft. should use a thicker speaker wire, 14 gauge can be used for runs up to 70ft. A hundred foot roll of two conductor 14 gauge speaker wire will run you about $44.99.

There are several ways to get the wire from your receiver to your speakers. The easiest scenario is running the speaker wire through an attic or crawl space, if that is not possible, the second easiest solution is using exterior conduit that you paint to match the house, or try running the wire under the base board or crown molding. Finally, there are cable fishing tools and tape available on the market to make the wire installation easier, I have included a couple of links to additional resources regarding snaking speaker wire.

Follow the instruction for mounting your speakers, outdoor speakers are quick and easy to mount, and are a great addition to any outdoor environment. Visit OnlyFactoryDirect.com for additional support in selecting and installing an outdoor speaker system.
